Because Mum died in January 2009, I decided I wasn't going to be in the UK for Christmas 2009. I finally picked on Taba Heights, Egypt. The weather in the UK was abysmal when I left, snow, ice and freezing temperatures. In Taba it was warm, although there was a cool breeze some evenings. I spent most days just lazing by the pool, but on Boxing day I went by ferry and coach to Petra in Jordan. On Christmas Eve the hotel laid on a really good meal after a cocktail party and nativity show using real animals. Then for Christmas Day, Father Christmas arrived by parasail. He had a bit of a problem after transferring to a kayak, which overturned and was swept away! They rescued him and he finally arrived on a camel ½ hour late! My Christmas dinner was sausage and chips by the beach, in the sun, magic!
I've always wanted to see Petra and I finally managed it on Boxing Day. It was a long day but well worth it. I took a ferry direct to Aqaba and then a long drive through the desert to Petra. We only had three hours there, but to really do it justice, you need three days! I saw the famous Treasury and clambered about on the rocks and explored various tombs and caves. It was well worth it. It was my first zonking holiday of 2009 and it was really good to do nothing for a week. I may not do Christmas abroad in 2010, but I could easily be persuaded to another time.
